THE PATTERN BOOKS

The Pattern Books are a two-volume set of artists’ books running to several hundred pages. Throughout these pages, which form a poetic-visual diary over a period of my life, I am exploring a particular way of being in the world and interpreting it.

I suppose one could call this way the path of synchronicities. I set myself the task of staying alert to patterns of co-incidence.( The later Books of Co-incidence also on this website, is a continuation of this process with a tighter focus, the focus of religion). The Pattern Books reveal what patterns naturally arose in my daily life in my small and personal world and in the larger world of global news and events.

I was particularly interested in how these two worlds the big and the small, overlapped, throwing up similar themes and mapping a consciousness of the times. I held in mind the dictum, ‘As above, so below’, as recorded in the famous Hermetic text, the Emerald Tablet (also known as the Tabula Smaragdina) and attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary Hellenistic figure. This particular cryptic dictum contains the idea of entanglement, that all is connected in a greater scheme of things, that in the smallest details the larger patterns can be observed. Reality is in a sense fractal and one can enter the hologram of the fractal universe through the tiniest doorway.
